steep turns and landings
Steep turns isn't on the list of Fifteen Things that a student pilot must do before soloing, but it should be, if you ask me. So, we're going to do steep turns today and then traffic pattern work at 21D. Steep turns are a most deceptively simple maneuver. I demonstrate the first set -- Student's only activity during this is to look at where the cowling or glareshield or whatever intersects the horizon and memorize how it looks. Then copy. I have to do a 720-degree turn going to the right to get stabilized enough to give Student a decent view. Student does two sets, neither of which I have to abort for a do-over. While Student practices, it's fun to lift up my arms, because they weigh 20% more than usual.

There isn't much going on at 21D. Sometimes, it can be really busy here on a nice weekday evening. An airplane in the pattern is using runway 4, so we'll use it, too. 4/22 is the short runway here, so yuck. We come in high on final for the first landing. I suggest a slip, but Student is already manipulating the controls and trying to get into one. Good idea, and a good demonstration of Correlation. We do three more patterns. Student does the radios about half the time, and I just take over when he gets busy. I'm in the mood for more landings, but we have to get the airplane back. Student makes a completely unassisted landing, and it's quite nice. FNA!

Next time: traffic pattern.
